Thermal Springs

Thermal springs with their small pools

The thermal springs in Gialtra constitute an ideal, quiet destination for those seeking natural therapy, deep relaxation, and rejuvenation, far from the crowds. They are located right next to the sea and offer a unique experience: hot waters that bubble up naturally, rich in minerals and sulfur compounds, and flow directly into small pools on the beach, creating a natural “spa” with crystal-clear waters and views over the North Euboean Gulf.

The water temperature usually ranges from 47 to 49 degrees Celsius (depending on the season), making them perfect for outdoor hydrotherapy. The waters are particularly rich in sulfur and other minerals, and are considered highly effective for:

  • Rheumatic conditions and musculoskeletal problems (arthritis, lower back pain, sciatica, tendinitis).
  • Dermatological diseases (psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis).
  • Chronic gynecological conditions, vascular issues, and general revitalization of the body.

Historical Information

The thermal springs in Gialtra have been known since antiquity, alongside the much more famous springs of Aidipsos (just a few kilometers across the bay). The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with Neolithic settlements and Early Helladic period installations nearby (e.g., at Kasteli Gialtron). During the Classical period (5th–4th centuries BC), Gialtra developed in parallel with Aidipsos as a spot with hot springs by the sea. Athenians settled here around the time of the Greco-Persian Wars, and marble funerary stelae with reliefs (from the 4th century BC) have been found, attesting to permanent habitation near the modern village.

In Roman times (1st–3rd centuries AD), the area experienced great prosperity due to the therapeutic waters — similar to Aidipsos, where the general Sulla visited for treatment (and the “Baths of Sulla” still exist). In Gialtra, visible walls of Roman bath buildings have been identified right next to where the springs flow today, showing that the Romans systematically exploited them.

Today, the springs are a “hidden treasure” of Northern Evia: quieter and more natural than the organized facilities in Aidipsos, ideal for those who want an authentic connection with nature and history. If you’re staying in Gialtra, they are right by your beach — a reason more to enjoy the relaxation and wellness that have been offered here for thousands of years!
