Location
The Drymonas Waterfalls are located in northern Evia, at an altitude of 620 meters, between the villages of Drymona and Kerasia. The landscape stands out for its wild beauty and its distance from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is approximately 50 kilometers from Gialtra, a route that takes about one hour by car, offering visitors a pleasant drive through the natural scenery of Evia.
River
The waterfalls form part of the Sipias River, which originates from the Xiro Oros (Dry Mountain) and flows into the North Euboean Gulf. This water system includes a network of small streams that converge to create three impressive waterfalls. In turn, these form two small natural pools with cool waters. The tallest waterfall, notable for its power, plunges from a height of 15 meters (though some sources describe the main one around 10 meters), producing a sound that harmoniously blends with the surroundings and provides visitors with a profound sense of peace.
Biodiversity
The area around the waterfalls is characterized by exceptional biodiversity, thanks to the dense forest that surrounds it. The dominant trees are black pines, oaks, and Aleppo pines, creating a rich green backdrop. Near the waters, you can also find plane trees, maples, wild cedars, elms, and other species that thrive in moist environments. In spring and summer, the landscape is enriched with a variety of wildflowers, such as orchids and anemones, adding color and vitality to the natural palette of the region.
The fauna of the waterfalls is equally impressive and diverse. In the forests and mountainous areas live raptors such as short-toed eagles, common buzzards, and peregrine falcons, while at night nocturnal species like eagle owls and little owls fill the air with their characteristic calls — though they are not easy to spot. The aquatic ecosystem hosts amphibians (such as frogs and salamanders), reptiles (like lizards), and a multitude of insects that maintain the biological balance. Among the mammals are foxes, weasels, badgers, hedgehogs, hares, moles, and various species of bats, which often hide in the shadows of the trees or near the riverbanks.
Activities
The area has been gently developed to facilitate visitor access without altering its natural charm. A small network of trails, wooden bridges, and benches allow for comfortable and safe exploration. The waterfalls offer plenty of options for hiking, with routes varying in length and difficulty — ideal for both beginners and experienced walkers. Additionally, the area is popular for canyoning, an adventure activity that combines rappelling with ropes, swimming, and walking, attracting thrill-seekers from all over Greece.
