The Lichadonisia (also known as Lichades) are a small archipelago of 7+ islets located directly opposite Kavos Lichada in northern Evia — a hidden gem boasting natural beauty reminiscent of exotic paradises (many call them the “Seychelles of Greece”). They stand out for their beautiful beaches with golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters (often shallow and transparent), striking coastlines with rocks, and dense vegetation. Mythology
The Lichadonisia have a rich history blending mythology and geological reality. According to ancient myth, they take their name from Lichas, the loyal servant (or herald) of Heracles. Deianira, the hero’s wife, believing he was unfaithful, sent him a poisoned tunic (dyed with the blood of the centaur Nessus) via Lichas. When Heracles put it on, he suffered excruciating pain and, in a fit of rage, hurled Lichas into the air. Lichas’s body fell into the sea and formed the islands, giving them the name Lichadonisia.
Geology
From a geological perspective, the islands are of volcanic origin, formed thousands of years ago by powerful underwater eruptions and tectonic movements. A major earthquake in 426 BC submerged large parts of the area while simultaneously raising or reshaping the islets into the form we see today — a catastrophe that contributed to their current shape and position.
Sports and Access
The area offers opportunities for water sports (kayaking, snorkeling, diving in clear waters with a rich seabed), hiking on the islets’ trails, and nature exploration, plus a shipwreck for those seeking something extra. Access is exclusively by boat (no road connection), with daily ferry services (often with glass bottoms for viewing the seabed) from Kavos Lichada or Kamena Vourla. From Loutra Gialtron, it’s about 25–30 minutes by road to Kavos, then by boat.
