The Church of Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Gialtra. The church was founded in 1884 and serves as the main church of the village. The principal church stands out for its size and its intricately carved wooden iconostasis, which features icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint Nicholas, and other saints. In the narthex (porch) of the church, there is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary.
Saint Nicholas was born in 270 in Patara, Lycia, in Asia Minor, to pious and wealthy parents, Epiphanios and Nonna, who provided him with a Christian upbringing and thorough education in theology and philosophy. He became bishop of Myra in Lycia, an important port city of the Roman Empire, in the 4th century AD. In 325 AD, he participated in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea under Emperor Constantine the Great, where he defended the Orthodox faith against the Arian heresy and contributed to the formulation of the Nicene Creed. After returning from the Council, he continued his pastoral work in Myra, helping the poor, protecting the unjustly accused, and guiding his flock with charity until his death. Saint Nicholas passed away peacefully on December 6, 343, leaving behind a legacy as a wonderworker.
He is a beloved saint, particularly known as the protector of sailors—due to his miracles involving the rescue of ships from storms—as well as of children, the poor, and travelers. His fame spread from Asia Minor throughout the Christian world, with churches and cities bearing his name from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe.
In Gialtra, his feast day on December 6 is a central event. The Divine Liturgy is followed by a procession of his icon through the village streets — a tradition that strengthens community bonds and reflects the area’s maritime identity, as Yialtra is a seaside village. The faithful offer bread and sweets to visitors, continuing the custom of hospitality, while votive offerings and prayers express devotion to the saint, who is regarded as the protector of the local community.
